Hampshire is to the west, Surrey is to the north, East Sussex to the east and the English Channel with its beaches to the south.

Speakers of other languages may have trouble being understood, but locals are often willing to be patient and multilingual dictionaries are available at bookstores

Get in

• 1 Gatwick Airport (LGW ^IATA) is six miles north of Crawley. It has global connections and has direct road and rail links to the south coast, so you don't need travel via central London.

Drink

Local wine: Nyetimber and Wiston Estate vineyards are near Pulborough. Bolney Estate is near Haywards Heath.
