Buba is a city of 8,600 people (2012) in Guinea-Bissau.
Understand
editDuring his presidency of Guinea-Bissau (2000-2003), Kumba Yala planned to move the capital city to Buba. Those plans were dropped after he was deposed in a coup d'état.
Construction is under way for a deepwater port that could host three 70-tonne vessels at any given time. It is being built by Angola Bauxite to export bauxite.
Buba is inhabited mainly by the ethnic groups of Beafadas and Mandingo, and there is considerable minority Fulani, Balanta, Manjacos and roles, as well as descendants of Portuguese.
The local economy is based on fishing, agriculture and trade. Rice, peanuts and maize are planted and shifting agriculture is practiced , which uses fires, a practice that threatens the endemic forest of this region.
Get in
editBuba is crossed by National Road No. 2 (N2), which connects it to Fulacunda, to the northwest, and Quebo, to the southeast. In addition to the N2, Buba also connects via Regional Road nº 7 (R7) to Batambali, to the southwest.
To get here from Bolama, take the 7:00 Pirogue to São João (CFA 300), then a mototaxi to Nova Sintra, then the 11:00 bus to Buba (CFA 1000 for each of the two route sections, Aug 2023). The bus is a truck transformed into an uncomfortable bus, and the road conditions are very poor. However, as of August 2023, there are road works going on to renovate the street between Nova Sintra and Fulacunda.
Get around
edit- The bus station is 5 minutes northeast of the 1 roundabout. Buses go to Catio and towards Bissau or Bafata, and elsewhere.
