South Sulawesi language predominantly spoken by the Bugis ethnic group
Phrasebooks > Bugis phrasebook

Bugis or sometimes also identified as Buginese (known natively as Basa Ogi ᨅᨔᨕᨚᨁᨗ or Basa Ugi ᨅᨔᨕᨘᨁᨗ) is a language spoken predominantly by the Bugis people, native to the southern hemisphere of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

Writing

edit
Lontaraʼ script in the Bugis language lesson textbook for Indonesian speakers

Bugis language has its own native writing system called Lontaraʼ (written in Lontaraʼ script as ᨒᨚᨈᨑ), it is the native script of Bugis closely related to the Jangang-jangang script used by Makasarese for Makasar language. Though still used in native documents, and sometimes seen side by side with Latin script in street signs and the names of public buildings, it has been almost totally replaced by the Latin alphabet. A traveller will almost never have to read Lontaraʼ script to get information. Makes an awesome tattoo, though.
