editByron is located in the northern region of the state of Illinois. It belongs to Byron Township. The state capital, Springfield, is located about 322 kilometers to the southwest, and the second-largest city in the United States, Chicago, is approximately 151 kilometers to the northeast. The city is situated south of the Rock River, and about 2 kilometers northeast of the city center lies Lake Louise. State Route 2 and State Route 72 pass through the city. The Byron Nuclear Generating Station, which began operations in 1985 after a construction period of around 10 years, is located to the south of the city. It is one of the last nuclear power plants in the United States to receive a construction permit.
