Cunnamulla is a town of 1,500 people in south-western Queensland. It is the largest town and civic centre of the Paroo Shire. The Warrego River flows through the centre of the town.

Cunnamulla is 190 km (120 mi) from Charleville via the A71 Mitchell Highway. While it is a sealed two-lane road, the road is prone to flooding.

Queensland Rail offer a mini-bus connection from the Westlander train to Charleville twice weekly.

Cunnamulla is around 2 hours drive from Charleville via Wyandra.

Get around edit

There is no car rental or public transport in Cunnamulla. Most of the attractions in the town are within walking distance. A car is required to see the surrounding area or to get to the weir.

  • Visitors Information Centre. There is a museum attached to the visitor's centre, and a display of Aboriginal art. free.
  • Cunnamulla Fella (Next to the Visitors Information Centre). A statue showing the stereotypical bushman from the area. free.
  • Cunnamulla Weir (5km downstream of Cunnamulla). Picnic area and weir. No swimming is allowed close to the weir, but you can swim further upstream. free.
  • Robbers Tree. The last person executed in Queensland for robbery under arms was trapped up the tree by local people and their dogs. Tree is floodlit in the evening. free.

  • Cunnamulla Heritage Trail. Pick up a brochure at the visitor's centre for a walking or driving tour around explaining the history of Cunnamulla free.
  • Walk along the Warrego, Bulloo Developmental Road (Just over the Warrego River bridge on the left). A 2km gravel path along the Warrego River, with bird hides and a sunset viewing area. free.
