Southwest portion of the city of Calgary

Southwest Calgary is a district in Calgary, Alberta. It is a large, mostly suburban residential area that has some of the city's more prestigious neighbourhoods.

Understand edit

Divided by the Elbow River and Glenmore Reservoir, the area is known by its parks and Heritage Park. Macleod Trail is the boundary between the southwest and southeast quadrants for significant portions, but for the purposes of this guide all points-of-interest adjacent to Macleod Trail are included are listed under Southwest Calgary. The area south of Fish Creek and west of the Bow River, which includes a portion of Southeast Calgary, is informally known as the "Deep South".

By CTrain edit

The CTrain Red Line runs parallel to Macleod Trail and runs south to Somerset-Bridlewood, while the CTrain Blue Line runs west along Bow Trail and 17 Avenue SW to 69 Street SW. Stops of interest include:

By bus edit

Southwest Calgary is connected to other parts of the city by Calgary Transit. The following routes are good ways to get in and around:

  • MAX Yellow (#304): express bus with limited stops; connects Mount Royal University and Heritage Park with City Centre; major streets include 24 Street SW, Southland Drive, 14 Street SW, and Crowchild Trail.
  • MAX Teal (#306): express bus with limited stops; connects Mount Royal University and Heritage Park with Westbrook station (CTrain Blue Line) and Heritage station (CTrain Red Line); continues into Southeast Calgary; major streets include 37 Street SW, 14 Street SW, and Heritage Drive.
  • #2: runs down 17 Avenue SW (east of Sarcee Trail), connects to City Centre
  • #3: runs down Elbow Drive (north of Heritage Drive), connects to City Centre and Heritage station (CTrain Red Line)
  • #9: connects Mount Royal University with Westbrook station (CTrain Blue Line) and Chinook station (CTrain Red Line); continues into Northwest Calgary and the University of Calgary; major streets include 37 Street SW and 58 Avenue SW.
  • #20: connects Mount Royal University and Heritage Park with Heritage station (CTrain Red Line); continues into Northwest Calgary and the University of Calgary; major streets include Crowchild Trail, 14 Street SW, and Heritage Drive.

By car edit

Macleod Trail and Crowchild Trail are the main north-south arterial routes that connect with the City Centre, with Crowchild Trail continuing into Northwest Calgary. Glenmore Trail is the major east-west arterial into Southeast Calgary, and connects with Sarcee Trail which provides access to the Trans-Canada Highway in Northwest Calgary. Bow Trail and 17 Avenue SW provide alternate access from the western neighbourhoods into the City Centre. Stoney Trail (Highway 201), known as Tsuu T'ina Trail through the Tsuu T'ina First Nation, ends west of Sarcee Trail (as of October 2021), however an extension is under construction to complete its status as Calgary's ring road.

Neighbourhoods of interest edit

  • 1 Marda Loop / Garrison Green (east of Crowchild Trail along 33 Avenue SW). Marda Loop contains a large number of quaint shops, restaurants, and services and is a real up and comer area and would be a great place to check out. Marda Loop, centered on the intersection of 33rd Avenue and 20th Street SW, is the older of the two areas and in mid-August hosts the Marda Gras Street Festival along 33 Avenue between 19 Street and 23 Street SW. Garrison Green is a newly developed residential/shopping district immediately to the south of 32 Avenue that features its own mix of eclectic shops and old-towne storefronts.    
  • 2 Parkhill. Parkhill is a neighbourhood south of downtown. It is a quite wealthy area that once had many old homes. Today it is home to a range of modern designs, with few old homes still standing. It's a very interesting neighbourhood to visit.

  • 3 The Military Museums, 4520 Crowchild Trail SW, +1 403-974-2850. The most extensive military museum in Canada outside of the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, this facility houses galleries devoted to four local army regiments, galleries for the air force and navy, and several general interest galleries. It covers Canadians' service in the Boer War, the World Wars, the Korean War, the Cold War, and post-1945 operations with the UN and NATO including Cyprus, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan. There is an outdoor historical vehicle display. Formerly the Museum of the Regiments.

  • 4 Mount Royal University, 4825 Mount Royal Gate SW, +1 403-440-5000. Mount Royal University was founded in 1910 and moved to its present campus in 1972. It was granted university status in 2009, and offers 12 degrees and 32 majors.    
  • 5 Ambrose University (Ambrose University and Seminary), 150 Ambrose Circle SW (near 69th Street station (CTrain Blue Line)), +1 403-410-2000. Private Christian liberal arts university; official Canadian school of both the Church of the Nazarene and the Christian and Missionary Alliance.

Glenmore Reservoir
  • 6 Glenmore Reservoir. The Glenmore Reservoir and Dam are located on the Elbow River, they were constructed in 1932 to provide safe and sufficient supply of drinking water. The City of Calgary offers sailing lessons and boat rentals on the reservoir. The reservoir is home of the Glenmore Sailing Club, the Calgary Rowing Club and the Calgary Canoe Club for both social and organized sporting events in Calgary. From May 1 to October 31 the reservoir is open for fishing, sailing, rowing and canoeing. Swimming in the reservoir is not permitted. There are popular pathways and bikeways looping around the perimeter of Glenmore Reservoir that are open all year.    
    • 7 North Glenmore Park, 7305 Crowchild Tr SW. Daily 5AM-11PM. North Glenmore Park borders the north side of the Glenmore Reservoir and has a tennis court, pathways, playgrounds and many picnic areas. It is the area surrounding the north side of the reservoir and is the home to both the Calgary Canoe Club and Calgary Rowing Club.
    • 8 South Glenmore Park, 90 Ave & 24 St SW. Daily 5AM-11PM. South Glenmore Park is the area surrounding the south side of the reservoir which includes the Weaselhead Natural Area. It is also home to the Variety Children's Park, a playground and water park that is accessible to disabled children. South Glenmore Park also houses the Glenmore Sailing School.
  • 9 Battalion Park, 3001 Signal Hill Dr SW. A tribute to local soldiers that trained for the First World War at the former Sarcee Camp, this small park has an interpretive 500-m-long walking trail/staircase up the side of a steep hill. Soldiers of the Canadian Expeditionary Force left enormous battalion numerals spelled out in whitewashed stones on the hillside, which have been restored as a permanent memorial. The trail also includes a monument and a self-guided tour with historical tablets and photographs. Most of the numbers are easily seen from the parking lots of the nearby Signal Hill and West Hills shopping centres.    
  • 10 Edworthy Park, 5050 Spruce Dr SW (south access near Bow Tr & Sarcee Tr; north access near 16 Ave NW / Shaganappi Tr / Bowness Rd). Edworthy Park sits in a valley along the Bow River in southwest Calgary and includes the majestic Douglas Fir Trail and historical Lawrey Gardens.    
  • 11 River Park, Sandy Beach & Britannia Slopes, 50 Ave & 14A St SW. River Park, Sandy Beach and the Britannia Slopes together form a popular park and recreation area for Calgarians. This regional park is located north of the Glenmore Dam and along the Elbow River in southwest Calgary.
  • 12 Stanley Park, 4011 1A St SW. Daily 5AM-11PM. Located along the Elbow River in southwest Calgary, Stanley Park is a favourite destination place for picnicking, swimming, canoeing, tobogganing and lawn bowling.

  • 3 Spruce Meadows. Just south of the city on Highway 22X, Spruce Meadows is a world-renowned show jumping and equestrian facility. When there are major events at Spruce Meadows, a free shuttle takes visitors from the Somerset/Bridlewood C-Train station (Route 201) to Spruce Meadows. Check Spruce Meadows website for dates and times. Free when there are no events; some events are also free. Tickets for major events start at $5 per person.    
    • 4 ATCO Field (formerly Meadows on the Green). Spruce Meadows also owns Cavalry FC, a soccer club that started play in 2019 as a founding member of the Canadian Premier League. Cavalry plays in a modular stadium on the facility grounds.    
  • 5 Grey Eagle Resort & Casino (Grey Eagle Event Centre), 3777 Grey Eagle Drive, Tsuut’ina Nation (near Glenmore Trail & 37 Street SW), +1 403-385-3777, toll-free: +1-844-719-8777.
