Corozal is a town of 35,000 residents (2020) in the northern part of the mountainous region of the island along a geographical region often called the Karst country (or more geologically-accurate the Northern Karst). The northern part of the municipality is home to the characteristic mogotes (distinctive karstic hill formations) while the southern part is located in the Cordillera Central, the central mountain range of Puerto Rico. The town gets its name from the corozo palm tree (Acrocomia media) a species native to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Get around

edit

As with most towns in Puerto Rico, Corozal is quite car-centric so driving is the best way to get around town.

  • 1 Corozal Pueblo (downtown Corozal). See the historic Roman Catholic church, Spanish-style recreational plaza, and the municipal buildings surrounded by streets and shops.
You can drive around the pueblo or park your car and walk around the square and into the plaza. The Spanish law, which regulated life in Puerto Rico in the early 19th century, stated the plaza's purpose was for celebrations and festivities. La Sagrada Familia Church is across from the plaza. The square is also home to several restaurants and bars.

The bridge is mostly famous for its headless ghost legend. Mavilla Bridge (Q106472996) on Wikidata Mavilla Bridge on Wikipedia
