El Monte is located between I-10 (to the south) and I-210 (to the north), and I-605 (to the east).

By bus

El Monte has a major bus terminal hub for Greyhound and Los Angeles Metro.

By plane

• For commercial passengers, the closest major airports are in Burbank (BUR ^IATA) 30 mi (48 km) northwest, and Ontario (ONT ^IATA), 30 mi (48 km) east.
• 1 San Gabriel Valley Airport (EMT  ^IATA). A popular destination for general aviation private pilots. While it is a controlled field, it has fairly low traffic for an LA metro field.
