Summary

Description
English: Ardrossan Castle Originally a property of the Barclays, it later came into the ownership of the Ardrossans of that Ilk and finally the Montgomeries. Once abandoned, a quantity of stonework was removed by Cromwell to build his Citadel at Ayr. William Wallace is said to have taken the castle, murdered the garrison and thrown them into the dungeon which later became known as Wallace's Larder. Wallace's ghost is said to appear on stormy nights. The visible remains of the castle date mainly from the 15th-century.
