Um dos pontos mais famosos da cidade Canoas é a Praça Santos Dumont, mais conhecida como Praça do Avião. No local, um avião de fabricação inglesa F-8 Gloster Meteor, sustentado por um suporte de concreto armado, faz uma homenagem à importância da Aeronáutica para o desenvolvimento municipal.

O Momunento do Avião, erigido em homenagem ao pioneiro da aviação mundial Santos Dumont, que voou com o 14-Bis, foi doado pela V Zona Aérea, sediada em Canoas, e inaugurado no dia 19 de janeiro de 1967, com a presença do Ministro da Aeronáutica, Márcio de Souza Mello, data em que foi inaugurado também o Núcleo Residencial para Oficiais, na Vila Ícaro (Vila Militar), em Canoas. (Colaboração do decano jornalista Xico Júnior, em 12.05.2007)
