The 16 Buddhist grottoes of Stone Bell Mountain (Shi Zhong Shan) were carved out during the Nanzhao Kingdom (8th-9th century A.D.; capital at Dali). The grottoes are part of Stone Treasure Mountain (Shibao Shan) Park, which is located 140 km (90 mi) north of Dali, halfway along the road to Lijiang.
