Summary

Description The Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument is jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the National Park Service (NPS). Covering more than one million acres of remote and unspoiled public lands, this monument offers a wealth of scientific opportunities. The monument is home to countless biological, historical and archeological treasures. Deep canyons, mountains and lonely buttes testify to the power of geological forces and provide colorful vistas. For those willing to make the long, remote drive, this monument offers spectacular vistas and scenery. Vegetation ranges from Mohave Desert flora to ponderosa pine forest. A variety of wildlife lives in the monument, including mule deer, bighorn sheep, wild turkey, and four species of rattlesnakes. This is one of the premier areas for mule deer hunting in the country. Permits are extremely limited and regulated through the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Here, paleozoic and mesozoic sedimentary rock layers offer a clear view to understanding the geologic history of the Colorado Plateau. The monument encompasses the lower portion of the Shivwits Plateau, an important watershed for the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. Beyond the phenomenal geological resources, the monument also contains countless biological and historical values.
