English: One of some views to the old village below the hill.
These pictures show the landscape and some buildings as one reaches the top of a hill that towered over the village. When these pictures were taken a notice indicated that in 363 AD, the Byzantines turned this place into a fortress made of solid rocks. The castle, sometimes called saray or palace, which is completely made of natural rocks, can be reached by two ways, one from the East and one from the West. During the Artukid period seven consecutive gates protected the eastern road, two of them are still obvious. There are two secret stairways to the north of the castle, one of these stairs was exposed as a result of natural destruction and can be seen from (across the) river. The castle area is surrounded by the Ulu Camii or Grand Mosque (see Mosques in Hasankeyf), a number of mausoleums, and many other buildings, none of them identified at the time. |
