Summary

Description

St. Mel's Cathedral, Longford, County Longford, Ireland

English: Nave of St. Mel's Cathedral, looking towards the main altar in north direction (liturgically east). The baptismal font was carved from white Carrara marble by Tom Glendon, its surrounding mosaic on the floor is the work by the ceramic artist Laura O'Hagan. Quote from Bishop Colm O'Reilly: “The baptistery is to be located at the main entrance. Located there it cannot be ignored as we enter the cathedral. [..] Every time that people enter the cathedral they will pass the font and place hands in the water and thereby will be reminded of their commitment to Christ through their baptism.” (See St. Mel's Cathedral Longford – Visitor's Guide; quote from Colm O'Reilly, Restoring a Cathedral – burden or opportunity, The Furrow, vol. 63, no. 10, October 2012, pp. 455–459 (quote from: p. 458), JSTOR 41709056.)
