Summary

Description
English: St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, 500 Parker Avenue at Parkside Avenue, Buffalo, New York, August 2020. Founded in 1926 due to increased urbanization in the western portion of the North Park neighborhood and what was then the long trip required to reach the nearest Catholic church, St. Rose of Lima is most famous for the architectural design of its present (1965) church building, an example of the New Formalism style - one that retained the simplicity of Modernism while reneging somewhat on its categorical rejection of historic aesthetic forms. Accordingly, St. Rose of Lima's design reimagines traditional elements of church architecture (i.e. its cruciform floor plan, stained glass windows, and large frontal tower) along Modernist lines: the stained-glass windows sport abstract geometric forms, while the tower is topped with a round arch (in apparent imitation of the multiple barrel vaults lined up in rows along the ceiling) with thin concrete bands on the front whose vertical lines are reminiscent of Minoru Yamasaki's original World Trade Center buildings (another work of New Formalist architecture). Presenting quite a contrast is the more traditional Collegiate Gothic style of the other buildings of the St. Rose complex, both dating to the parish's inception in 1926 and not seen in this photo: the former school to its west, at the corner of Winston Road (which housed the worship space until the construction of the present-day church), and the rectory to its north facing Parker Avenue.
