Summary

Description

Pictou, Nova Scotia. The Hector Heritage Quay, seen here, is a historical interpretive centre built in 1992. Despite its name, which in Latin means "New Scotland", there was no significant population of Scots in Nova Scotia until 1773, when the 85-foot, Dutch-built sailing ship Hector arrived at Pictou after an arduous 11-week voyage on the Atlantic, carrying 189 Highlanders recruited with promises of free passage, a year's worth of free provisions, and a farm on the fertile shores of the Northumberland Strait. Despite the fact that the free provisions never materialized, the Scottish settlement survived and thrived, and Pictou would become important as the first stop for many future waves of Scottish immigrants who would settle all over Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island.
