No lugar das Laranjeiras, próximo de Alcoutim, encontramos um interessante sitio arqueológico revelado pelas cheias de 1876. Trata-se de uma antiga villa romana, construída no séc. I e da qual restam os vestígios de uma pars fructuaria, armazém onde se guardavam os produtos agrícolas. Igualmente interessantes são os vestígios arqueológicos de uma igreja cristã do séc. VI, que resultou da ocupação visigótica da Península Ibérica, após o declínio do Império Romano. Esta importante exploração agrícola continuou a funcionar durante a ocupação islâmica do Algarve no séc.
