Guapimirim is a former district of the municipality of Magé (from which it was emancipated in 1990) located on the outskirts of Greater Rio. It is the most northeastern municipality of Baixada Fluminense, at the foot of the Serra dos Órgãos, a section of the long mountain range known as Serra do Mar. The municipality is crossed by the BR-116 and the BR-493 highways, and is served by the Guapimirim railway line - an extension of the Gramacho/Saracuruna line, which starts in the Central do Brasil station, in downtown Rio -, having several suburban train stations within its territory. The urban expansion of the metropolis of Rio along the Guapimirim railway line (besides the BR-116 highway) ended in the Guapimirim city center.

Guapimirim is a native word known to indigenous Tupi peoples as "little spring". It sits within the base of the Serra dos Órgãos Mountains, where its popular tourist attraction, the Dedo de Deus is located. Almost 70 percent of the municipality is under territorial environmental protection, notably the Serra dos Órgãos National Park.
