The town was founded in 1865. It is well-known about Altia’s Koskenkorva manufacturing plant, located in the 1 Koskenkorva village, which produces ethanol as a raw material for Koskenkorva Viina, a clear spirit drink in Finland. Also known as “Kossu”, Koskenkorva has become one of Finland's most recognized brands, domestically and internationally.

The main routes to Ilmajoki are Highway 67 (from Kaskinen to Seinäjoki via Kurikka; known as Kurikantie and Seinäjoentie) and Highway 3 (E12) (from Tampere to Vaasa; known as Vaasantie).

By bus

Direct bus route is available from Seinäjoki. Timetables are available from Matkahuolto.

By plane

2 Seinäjoki Airport, located in Ilmajoki, is nowadays used only for some charter flights. The nearest airport with regular flights is 3 Vaasa Airport (VAA ^IATA), located in Vaasa.
