The town was founded in 1865. It is well-known about Altia’s Koskenkorva manufacturing plant, located in the 1 Koskenkorva village, which produces ethanol as a raw material for Koskenkorva Viina, a clear spirit drink in Finland. Also known as “Kossu”, Koskenkorva has become one of Finland's most recognized brands, domestically and internationally.

The main routes to Ilmajoki are Highway 67 (from Kaskinen to Seinäjoki via Kurikka; known as Kurikantie and Seinäjoentie) and Highway 3 (E12) (from Tampere to Vaasa; known as Vaasantie).

  • 5 The Statue of Ilkka (Ilkanpatsas), Ilkantie. Ilmajoki's monument, which encapsulates an essential part of country's history during the Cudgel War. The statue was erected at the place where the body of rebel leader Jaakko Ilkka was brought out for public viewing in January 1597.
