Kédougou is a town on the banks of the Gambia River, in the middle of the hills of the Bassari country. It is the capital of the administrative region that bears its name. For purposes of this travel guide, it is considered part of the Tambacounda Region of southeastern Senegal.

Kédougou is the largest city in Southeastern Senegal, which boasts a lush of hills, plenty of rain and rugged beauty that is distinct from the rest of Senegal. With a culture that often seems more Guinean that Senegalese, Kedougou would be a welcome stop for Senegalese travelers.

Formerly a part of the immense Region of Tambacounda, Kedougou became a capital in 2008.

The most spoken language is Pulaar.
