Khorramabad (also written as Khorram Abad) is the capital city of the Lorestan Province of Western Iran.

A railway line is under construction, but it is unclear when it will open to passenger traffic. Until then the nearest railway station is in Dorud, 65 km east of Khorramabad.

5 Paleolithic cave-dwelling sites

  • 1 Falak-ol-Aflak Castle (دژ شاپورخواست, Dež-e Shāpūr-Khwāst). A tall citadel located in the city center. Translated as the Heaven of Heavens, the castle dates back to the Sassanid era. Nowadays, the castle houses a popular museum.    
  • 2 Shapuri Bridge (پل شاپوری). Historic 1,500 year old bridge.    
  • 3 Brick Minaret (مناره آجری). 30 m high minaret built to help caravans find their ways through dark nights. A fire used to be lit at the top.
