Peru's gold museum contains a huge collection of gaudy, gold works. Not the best place to learn about Peruvian precolumbian cultures. A large part of a Peruvian 20,000-piece collection of gold is fake, according to the Peru's consumer protection agency. A new "branch office" has opened in LarcoMar in Miraflores that is much more focused and beautifully presented; best of all, of course, is that it is located in the main tourist area. Pachacamac
  • 9 Pachacámac (Museo de Sitio de Pachacámac). Pachacámac is about 25 km south of Lima. It is a huge archaeological site containing pre-Inca and Inca temples (entrance fee 6 Soles). This was one of the major pilgrimage sites in South America, in the years 500-1,500. The temples are constructed from adobe and are not very well preserved. There are three ramp pyramids and a temple of the sun (the only temple which may be accessed). Due to the fragile nature of the ruins and vandalism they may only be seen from a road. The on-site museum contains a variety of artifacts including ceramics, wood carvings, textiles and Inca quipus. From Miraflores, take a colectivo to 'Puente Primavera'. From there, take a 'San Bartolo' colectivo to Lurin (S/2.50). Get off just past the Cementerio Parque Del Recuerdo or tell the conductor that you want to get off at the ruinas de Pachacámac. Many bike tour companies offer tours of Pachacámac.
  • Museo de Criminalística de la Policía Nacional del Perú, Av. Aramburú 550, Surquillo, +51 1 221 8556.
  • Hacienda Mamacona, Alameda Mamacona, Lurin, +51 1 99418 6995. Hacienda Mamacona is located next to the ruins of Pachacámac and can be seen from the Temple of the Sun. Hacienda Mamacona is open to the public and is home to some of Peru's finest Paso Horses and hosts numerous events including the Festival del Caballo de Paso Peruano and Concurso Nacional del Caballo de Paso.

  • Sanguchon Campesino Alfredo Benavides, Av. Alfredo Benavides 3580, Urb. Ovalo Higuereta, +51 953 633 897. They have really good and greasy hamburgers, tacos, quesadillas, etc. Their best burger is probably the 'A Lo Pobre' that has burger, egg and baked banana for around S/12 and is sure to fill your stomach.

Santiago de Surco/San Juan de Miraflores

edit
  • 1 Hilton Garden Inn Lima Surco, Calle Monte Rosa 287, +51 1 2089400. The Hilton brand makes its presence known here in the Surco business district, with a breakfast buffet and relatively classy feel compared to some of the surrounding buildings.

Lurin/Punta Hermosa/South Coast Areas

edit
  • 2 Bravo Surf Camp, Jr. Bartolome Herrera #100-102 Urb. Santa Cruz, Punta Hermosa, +51 1 2307743. It's like the quintessential hippie/gringo surf hostel with beer pong and table tennis people and cutting loose, only it's a couple of blocks from the beach. But it's comfortable and congenial with surf breaks nearby, and you can get a breakfast plan built into your room rate. 74 Soles.
