town in Berkeley County, South Carolina, United States of America

Moncks Corner is in Santee Cooper Country.

Understand edit

Moncks Corner was named after Thomas Monck, a real wonder who liked to have his name branded onto the chest of his slaves. Its origins date back to 1728 when a trading post was established. In 1780, it saw the Battle of Moncks Corner, where the British besieged the Americans who had set up camp here. Later it was a big point of commerce with the help of the railroads.

  • 2 Biggin Church Ruins (take hwy 52 northeast from town, then south on SC 412 until junction with Biggins Rd, where ruins are found). Remains of St John's Parish church that was built in 1711 and torched by the British during the Revolutionary War, then rebuilt and burned again later. Eerily enchanting.
  • 3 Cypress Gardens, 3030 Cypress Gardens Rd, +1 843 553-0515. Daily 9AM-5PM. This is probably the biggest draw to the area, a sort of commercialized botanical garden in the form of a swamp with plenty of alligators and cypress trees, experienced via an aquarium and boat tours and trails. $10 adults, $6.50 seniors, $5 children.
  • 4 Mepkin Abbey and Mepkin Abbey Botanical Gardens, 1098 Mepkin Abbey Rd, +1 843 761-8509. Daily 9AM-6PM. Monastery for Trappist monks who welcome visitors onto the grounds for reflection or sightseeing.

  • 1 Overton Park, 204 Short Stay Rd, +1 843 761-8039. Daily 10AM-6PM. Despite its size, Lake Moultrie doesn't seem to get a whole lot of love. But here is a park on its shores with a beach and recreation areas. Located on military grounds (JB Charleston) but it is supposedly open to the public upon payment of fee.
