Monte Águila

Monte Águila is a town of 6,600 people (2017) in the Bío Bío Region and in the Province of Bíobio, in Chile.

Monte Águila is a small city, 78 km from the capital of the Bio-Bio Region, Concepción. It is a city with a lot of culture and history, known for its railway industry, of great importance during the 20th century.

Get in

By plane

The town does not have airports, but it can be reached through the city of Concepcion, through Carriel Sur Airport, a short distance from Concepción, specifically Talcahuano.

By train

You can take a train (EFE) that arrives to Chillán, to later make a transfer to a bus that goes to the town of Yumbel to reach Monte Águila (paid separately). The section consists of two and a half hours and is done by a paved road and in primordial conditions.

By bus

From Santiago de Chile, there are different buses, which leave from the Santiago Central Station bus terminal. Also, from Concepción, buses leave to Cabrero, which requires a transfer to Monte Águila by minibuses or buses on the Chillán-Yumbel route.

By car

If you are coming on Route 5 South, at the height of km. 465, there is an exit to the city of Monte Águila, which will easily allow you to arrive. Another alternative is to enter the city of Cabrero, then follow the route that goes to the side of the railway line to the south, 6 km (3.7 mi).

By bus

The collective locomotion service (traditionally called "micros") of Monte Águila is made up of buses that run through the city, and with routes to Cabrero and Yumbel, for values close to 500 pesos throughout the tour.

By car

The vast majority of the streets of Monte Águila are paved and have few structural failures, however, there are older and not-so-central sectors in which unpaved or neglected streets predominate; Watch for possible potholes on the pavement.

• Monte Águila Square, in the center of Monte Águila. The park, reopened by the Municipality of Cabrero in 2017, is a sample of the history and traditions of the city, with a striking construction, in which there are 5 recreational areas: a historical area, which tells the history of the town and his railway heritage; a multipurpose area, mainly used in summer for concerts and outdoor activities; a playground, arranged for children; a commercial area, for the purchase and sale of products and a civic area, a place destined for important parades (such as the traditional Parade of National Holidays), and civic events.
• Monte Águila Station, near the center of Monte Águila. It includes some vestiges of the railway heritage of the history of Monte Águila, such as the train lines and the Monte Águila substation.

Events

• Verano Monteaguilino (literally Monteaguilean Summer) , held in February, for a week, or in a series of events distributed throughout the month, which depends on the year. It groups a series of musical, recreational and youth events, which range from concerts, dances, competitions, among many more. During its early years it was known as "Monteaguilean Week" (allusive to its duration of one week), which is still used until today by some people.
• Cruz de Mayo, held on May 3 of each year. It is a recognized traditional celebration of the Catholic Church that, according to the Roman rite, has located the discovery of the Holy Cross. It is a widespread holiday in Spain and Latin America, but in Chile it has acquired an identity linked to the rural and rural tradition.

Work

Monte Águila is not a place of high employability, therefore it is not advisable to arrive in the city to look for work, but to already have it insured upon arrival.

Stay safe

Monte Águila is a safe city, although it is recommended to take traditional precautions: do not expose valuables, do not leave the city center, and be aware of your belongings. If you are a victim of a crime, you can call the Chilean national police for free, at 133 (number of the Chilean police: Carabineros de Chile) or contact an officer of the institution. The complaint can also be made at the checkpoint located on Florencio Arrivillaga streets with Zañartu.
