Owatonna is the cultural, educational and commercial center for south central Minnesota and has many large businesses including Jostens, SPX, Truth Hardware, Cybex, Federated Insurance, Viracon and more. The city of just under 26,000 residents has a metro population of over 36,000. Owatonna's suburbs include Blooming Prairie, Medford and Ellendale.

The Reptile Amphibian and Discovery (RAD) Zoo is also in Owatonna. It is one of the largest reptile zoos in the world and is home to one of the largest alligators in the world.

Owatonna has many good parks to visit and holds softball and baseball tournaments during the summer and spring.
- 1 Steele County Free Fair, Steele County Fairgrounds. Every August. The largest county fair in Minnesota, and also the second largest fair in the state just behind the Minnesota State Fair.
