How to get in from central Perth depends on where exactly you're heading, as this is a vast area surrounding the city. Several districts are served by suburban rail (these rail lines are visible on the map below):
- Fremantle Line, servicing western Perth, to Fremantle.
- Midland Line, servicing eastern Perth to Midland, and offering transfers to regional and interstate rail services.
- Armadale/Thornlie Line, servicing south-eastern Perth to Armadale, with a spur line to Thornlie. As of 2024, this line is closed as part of a 12-month shutdown. Buses replace trains.
- Yanchep Line (formerly Joondalup Line), servicing north-western Perth to Yanchep (via Joondalup).
- Mandurah Line, servicing southern Perth, to Mandurah.
- Airport Line, servicing eastern Perth, to High Wycombe.
Transperth operates buses to the suburbs as well; you can use their journey planner to see what lines you should take to get where you're going.
As in suburbs elsewhere in the world, taxi or car can also be a good option.

Buses 30, 31 and 34 provide a quick and easy means by which to get to the zoo. But if you feel like a short walk, take the Transperth ferry from Elizabeth Quay. Once at Mends St Jetty, head up the hill along Mends St to the first major road (Mill Point Rd), cross at the traffic lights, turn left and then quickly right through the park to reach the zoo entrance. The park is closed to children, and becomes a fully licensed venue, serving alcohol as well as hosting bands after dark. The easiest mode of transport is the car.
