village in Solukhumbu District, Nepal

Understand

edit

Pheriche is the main village of the Pheriche Valley. Its altitude is 4240 m, but it is far colder than neighboring Dingboche due to the peculiarly icy wind blowing through the Pheriche Valley. Pheriche was heavily damaged during the earthquake in 2015 that rocked the area, though thankfully, no lives were lost there.

Get in

edit

It's about 1½ hour's walk from Shomare on the way up, and another 2-3 hours to Tokla.

Get around

The Everest Memorial

The Mount Everest Memorial is located in Pheriche, engraved with the names of every known climber (300+) who has died attempting to scale Mount Everest. The monument is shaped like a mountain with a ravine running through, made of stainless steel and stuffed with rocks collected from the nearby mountains, including Mount Everest itself.

Sleep

edit

There are many lodges where trekkers and climbers on their way to the Mt. Everest Base Camp can stay. It is an important acclimatization stopover.

Stay safe

edit

There is a rudimentary hospital in Pheriche that is operated under the auspices of the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA). The Pheriche hospital is open only during the two trekking/climbing seasons (March–May and October–December).
