By bus

edit

Daily buses run directly between Pilar and Asunción.

Buses between Encarnacion and Pilar require a change in San Ignacio de Misiones. You will need to walk around a corner to the opposite road to catch the appropriate bus. Depending on your destination there may be a small bus shelter or people may collect in front of a local shop. It is best to ask someone to ensure you stand in the proper place.

Get around

Pilar is one of the most safe and clean cities in Paraguay.

  • 1 Town Council Museum (Museo el Cabildo, Pilar). Set in a colonial building, this museum contains artifacts significant to Pilar, including when it was the Casa de Gobierno (house of government) while Pilar was the provisional capital during the Triple Alliance War. But sadly it is infrequently open.
  • 2 Iglesia Virgen Del Pilar. Built under the direction of Italian missionaries. Pilar was named after the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, Spain. You can cool off in the shady Plaza of the Heroes across the way.
  • Fiesta Hawaiana
  • 3 Mirador del Soldado Desconocido. A place from which you can view the Parana River and sunset.
  • 4 Museo Paolo Federico Alberzoni, +595 786 234 150. 08ː00-14ː30 M-F. About the textile industry of Pilar and a man who was central to Pilar's development.

Fishing and boating on the Rio Paraguay

  • 1 Mister Kombi (Central), +595 971 173 224. A place to eat where you can sit in or take your food to go to enjoy at the Mirador del Soldier Desconocido across the street.

Sleep

edit
  • 1 Hotel Las Garzas, +595 786 233 130. Even though it lacks a pool, this hotel will get you going with a breakfast in the morning.
  • 2 Hotel Las Hortensias, +595 981 637 554. Very spendy, ouch, but speaks of class with its exterior design, swimming pool, gym, a/c, and restaurant/bar. around US$99.
  • 3 Hotel Malian, +595 786 230 665. Close to stores and amenities downtown, this establishment has a restaurant of its own and provides breakfast in the mornings. More in the value category.
