Providence/North and East

North and East Providence are the outer neighborhoods in the north and east of Providence, RI. They are distinct from North Providence, which is a separate municipality.

• 1 Ladd Observatory, 210 Doyle Ave., ☏ +1 401 863-2323. Tuesday evenings. The astronomical observatory of Brown University was built in 1891. It is open to the public for viewing the Moon, planets, and stars. There is also a collection of historic scientific instruments on display. Free.  

Do

• 1 Triggs Memorial Golf Course, 1533 Chalkstone Ave, ☏ +1 401 521-8460. One of Rhode Island’s most well-known public golf courses. Located just minutes from downtown Providence, it offers views of the city from some of the more elevated points. It is a nice middle ground between a championship course and an enjoyable public course. Green fees: Weekend/Weekdays: $40 (18 Holes), $23 (9 Holes). Cart fees per player: $18 (18 holes), $9 (9 holes).

• 1 Frog and Toad, 795 Hope St, ☏ +1 401 831-3434. M-Sa 10AM-6PM, Su 11AM-4PM. A 'Mom and Pop' shop, Frog and Toad offers local art and handcrafted items, fair trade pieces from around the world, and an eclectic range of cards, jewelry, home goods, gifts for all occasions, and clothing. Complimentary gift wrapping. 
• 2 Paper Nautilus Books (formerly Myopic Books), 19 South Angell St, Wayland Square, ☏ +1 401 521-5533. Su-Tu noon-5PM, W-Sa 11AM-7PM. One of the local bookstores in the city. Boasting over 25,000 books with many rare copies and out of print books, it is a local gem. Paper Nautilus also has its lovely outdoor courtyard for reading during warmer weather and presents local artists around the stores. In this vein there is also the "Arto-mat", a cigarette vending machine modified to dispense small pieces of local artwork. 

Eat

• 1 Not Just Snacks, 833 Hope Street, ☏ +1 401 831-1150. This is a small restaurant that serves very traditional Indian and Pakistani food at an affordable price. This family owned and handicapped accessible business is open from 11AM-9PM 7 days a week. They do not take reservations but you can call in to place an order either to be eaten there or to take out. They do not serve and drinks that are alcoholic. However, they are a BYOB establishment and will provide you with glasses for beer or wine upon request. Both the outside and inside of the buildings are very unassuming so make sure your eyes are peeled when looking for it. 
• 2 Redstripe, 465 Angell St. A French bistro with an interesting menu. Fine wine to Colt 45 40oz. A lot of the food is made from scratch. Their most interesting menu item is a grilled cheese made with bellpaise cheese and pear finished off with pesto. Fair prices. 

Drink

• 1 Tantric, 1070 North Main St, ☏ +1 401 273-1070. Features include Red Carpet Thursdays, $2 Corona and shots. Dance floor, Hip Hop and R&B music. Admission to Tantric is usually $10.
