Rožnava

The city began as a settlement of miners who came here to extract the mineral wealth of the surrounding mountains. Its history is closely connected with the profitable mining of gold, silver, copper and later iron ore.

Get in

• 1 Train station (centre of the city). Express trains from Bratislava, Zvolen and Košice. (updated Nov 2016)
• 2 Bus station. There are daily connections from Bratislava (via Nitra, Zvolen, Lučenec) to Rožňava approximately every second hour. There are daily connections from Košice to Rožňava approximately every hour. 

By car

Two important roads pass through the Upper Gemer region:

• Road I/16 (E 58 and E 571) in the east-west direction
• Road I/67 in the north-south direction

Rožňava is 329 km from Bratislava by road.

See

• 1 Námestie Baníkov (Miners place). Big, square plaza in the historic centre of the city. 

Architecture

• 2 Watchtower (in the middle of the plaza). This tower of 38 m from half of 17th century served to protect the town from the Turkish invasion. It is the symbol of the city. 
• 3 Cathedral of the Assumption of St. Mary (Katedrála Nanebovzatia Panny Márie). The church was completed in 1304. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, the church underwent important reconstructions. The church has been the cathedral of the Diocese of Rožňava since 1776.  
• 4 Parish church of St. Anne. Baroque church from 1733. 
• 5 Lutheran church. Built between 1784 and 1786. 
• 6 City Hall. Has served this function since 1810.

• 8 Galéria Baníckeho múzea (Gallery of the mining museum), ☏ +421 58 732 30 41. 

Do

• 1 Kaltenecker brewery (behind the Shell gas station), ☏ +421 908 714 220, k.makovnikova@kaltenecker.sk. The brewery produces approx. 30 types of beer. Beer tastings are possible, and there is a restaurant nearby.
