Salt Cay is the smallest main inhabited island in the British Overseas Territory of Turks and Caicos. It has a population of 108 and has an area of 2.6 square miles. The only city in the Cay is Balfour Town. The island was colonized by the Bermudians. due to this, the abundance of sea salt on the island was discovered, giving its name, the Salt Cay.

One way to reach the Salt Cay is by taking a flight from Providenciales International Airport or Jags McCartney Airport in Grand Turk into the Salt Cay Airport. These routes are operated by Caicos Express Airways.

Another way is by taking a ferry from Grand Turk, which takes about an hour.

Get around

The roads on the Cay are unpaved, the main settlements have "Hard-Rolled Limestone Quarry Roads" and the rest of the island is made up of paths and trails.

Due to the small nature of the island, the main forms of transport are walking, biking and driving golf carts.

There are beaches on all sides of the island. However in many parts of the island, especially the eastern, the coastline is rocky.

The main beaches are the North Bay Beach and the Balfour Town Beach

During the winter months, Atlantic Humpbacks pass adjacent to the Salt Cay on their journey to warmer water, you can occasionally view the whales from the island. However, to get a closer view you must go out on boat.

Only five restaurants are located on the island. Porter's Island Thyme and the Coral Bar and Grill focus on international cuisine. Meanwhile Pat's Place serves authentic cuisine from the Turks and Caicos, and Oceanside Bistro as well as Fresh Catch focus on seafood.

Dickinsons Variety Store is the sole grocery store located on the island.

Unfortunately, there are no hotels or resorts on the island. The only way to have a place to stay is to rent a night in a house or villa.

Some places to stay are the Tradewinds Guest Suites, the Harbourside House and the Twilight Zone Cottage.
