Sandoy (lit. Sand Island) is an island in the Faroe Islands, south of Streymoy. It's one of the archipelago's more southerly islands: only Suðuroy, Skúvoy and the two small Dímun islands are further south.

Understand

edit

As Sandoy is approached from Streymoy, there are views of a tiny island to the west of Sandoy. This island, Trøllhøvdi belongs to Kirkjubøur and is used for stock grazing.

Sandoyartunnellin (road 12), which opened in December 2023, is an undersea tunnel connecting the island to Kirkjubøur in Streymoy, which has slashed travel times from Tórshavn to Sandoyar from 60 to 16 minutes. It is one lane each way.

There is an infrequent bus between Sandur and Skopun.

There is a local museum in Sandur village. If you travel by car you can go to the small charming villages on the east coast: Húsavík, Skálavík and Dalur, or to the small village Skarvanes south of Sandur.

  • 2 Biggest postbox in the world, Tormansvegur 58, Skopun. You probably didn't expect the world's largest postbox to be situated in a seemingly tiny town in a mostly forgotten part of the world, but the giant blue box is one of Skopun's main points of interest. Although it is on Tormansvegur, it can also be seen from Ognarvegur.
