Satipo, the capital of the province of the same name, is in the Junín Region of the Peruvian Amazon.

Spanish and Quechua are the most used languages, although the former is more widespread. You may also speak English with people who provide tourist services such as tourist guides, staff travel agencies and lodging establishments but the language may not be very high.

In Satipo there are banks including a Banco de Crédito and a Banco de la Nación. There is also a hospital.

Direct buses from Lima (10 hours). Most leave from La Victoria district.

By car from Lima (8 hours).

From Lima one can take a bus or train to Huancayo or a bus to Tarma or La Merced then onwards to Satipo.

To and from elsewhere in the province there are "combis" (cheap van buses) and private vehicles (most expensive but faster) that connect Satipo with most settlements. Always ask for prices before agreeing to the trip.

Within Satipo the most common form of transportation are motorcycle taxis (moto-taxi). It is recommended to use older drivers as there are also many young drivers without a licence.
