Saugerties

Saugerties is a village in Ulster County in New York.

Understand

Because of its proximity to Woodstock, Saugerties is famous for the event it never hosted. The Woodstock Music & Art Fair: "An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music" was held on August 15-18, 1969 at Max Yasgur's dairy farm near White Lake in Bethel NY after being turned away from Wallkill in Orange County NY. A blatantly-commercial “Woodstock 1994” event, intended to cash in on the 25th anniversary of the original festival, did take place on an 840-acre farm in Saugerties.

Get in

Saugerties is most easily accessed via Exit 20 off the New York State Thruway (I-87). It can also be reached via Exit 19 by taking US-209 North to US-9W North and the follow US-9W until it enter Saugerties.

• 1 Saugerties Lighthouse, On half-mile nature trail from the end of Lighthouse Drive, ☏ +1 845-247-0656. An 1869 red brick lighthouse at the mouth of the Esopus Creek, restored with early 20th-century furnishings. Small museum, souvenir shop, parlor, kitchen, keeper's quarters, and two guest bedrooms. Bed & breakfast accommodation, tours and special events, picnicking and swimming. Light tower offers views of the Hudson River, the Catskill Mountains, and Magdalen and Cruger Islands. Reachable by boat or nature trail.
