Shai Hills Resource Reserve is in Doryumu, the Shai Osudoku District of Greater Accra.

History

Shai Hills Resource Reserve was proclaimed a Forest Reserve in 1962 with an area of 47km² but was later expanded to 51km² in 1973.

Before 1892, it was home to the Shai people until they were sent out later by the British. The works of the Shai people still remain here in the reserve.

Flora and fauna

Baboons, green monkeys, antelopes, zebras, mammals, reptiles and over 172 bird species have been identified in the reserve.

About 50 km from Accra, located along the Tema-Akosombo road.

Fees and permits

Opens from 6AM to 5PM.

Any movement within the reserve (except at the visitor centre) needs to be accompanied by a (paid) guide.

  • Sayu Cave. Here you can watch and have a great view of about 173 species of bird.
  • Manyayo Hill.
  • Mogo Hill. This is the most popular spot for hiking.
  • Museum of Natural and Cultural History. You can decide to visit or rent a bike to roam the grounds.

  • Game viewing. Early in the morning is the best time for viewing.

  • You can visit the reserve all through the year, but it could be difficult travelling during the rainy season.
  • You can find baboon troop at the front gate amusing but be careful these baboons can snatch your personal belongings if you are not vigilant.
