national park in Western Australia

Stokes National Park is in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia, with long beaches and numerous recreational opportunities.

Understand

edit

The Stokes Inlet that lends the park its name offers many recreational activities on the water, in the surf or in the wetland.

The main camping and day area next to the mouth of the inlet is the usual spot but there are a couple other places in the park that are a bit off the beaten track.

Get around

edit
  • 1 Moir homestead ruins. The crumbling walls of a pioneer house. On the track to Fanny Cove.
  • 2 Stokes Estuary. This estuary is only connected to sea once in evert few years, and then only for a few weeks, as the high sand bar breaks, and is one of a kind to have this sort of landscape.
  • 3 Torradup Inlet. Similar landscape to Stokes Estuary.
  • 1 Margaret Cove. A fairly popular snorkelling and swimming spot. Fishing is also somewhat popular here, but it's not the best spot if you want to try and catch a big fish.
  • Heritage Walk Trail. A 2.8 km trail passing through some of the mallee heath parts of the park, linking Benwenerup Campground to Stokes Inlet Day Use Area.

There are no cafes, bars, kiosks, restaurants etc. in the park. Bring your own food with you.

Camping

edit
  • 1 Fanny Cove. Four large sheltered sites up in the dunes and a long drop toilet. No water or fires. Free to stay. Access by 4WD.
  • Stokes Inlet. Camp however you like in the prescribed sites.
  • Qaggi Beach. A ramble of campsites behind the dunes in the Banksia trees are suitable for caravans and every other accommodation you could drag in. The crusty looking toilet block is serviceable if the trees are not your thing. An honour box asks for $3 per night..
  • 2 Skippy Rock campground. Has nine large camping sites, nearby the beach. It works on a first in best dress system.

Backcountry

edit

Camping rough outside of the campsites or in parking lots is not permitted.
