Myer Centre

edit

DJ: I have never heard of such warnings (about watching your food in the myer center), and I live in Brisbane. I do not understand the warning either, it sounds as if people will attack you to take your food, which does not happen. It makes Myer Centre seem like a dangerous place. You should always keep an eye out for suspicious people, not just in the Myer Center, and I have not noticed an excess of "suspicious people" in the Myer Center that would warrant a specific warning. I think that Brisbane is a very safe and secure city. It is very easy to relax and and still feel safe and secure in Brisbane.

Brisbane (as well as the rest of Australia) has low homeless numbers due to government housing and support (centerlink). Perhaps this could be mentioned to balance some of the negativity in this article. (DJ)

No, it's because your food and drink will get spiked. I have personally been attacked in the myer centre three times so I consider it a very dangerous place. The security also don't respond to incidents on cameras and only keep the footage for 24 hours!

DJ: I do not want to sound disrespectful, but do you have any evidence to back up your claims? It seems that you might have just had a streak of bad luck, which does not reflect the generally safe and secure area. Could you please give some more detail as to what happened? You say you have been personally 'attacked' several times, but I don't think that it is the best way to describe food spiking, as it connotes violence, when people should be looking out for sly drink spikers, not violent gangs. It seems very strange to me, especially as there are usually lots of people around, it is always very well lit, and a high risk that and drink spikers would be seen or caught by someone. Why would someone want to 'spike' your food at a shopping center? Predatory people do it in night clubs, but i can't understand why it would happen in a shopping mall. What do they spike food with? My partner works at the Myer Center, and I have lived in Brisbane for well over 10 years, neither of us has ever heard anything about such attacks or problems. Perhaps you have been unlucky. I don't feel that it reflects the area in general as it is very safe. (DJ)

DJ: I have removed this section as there has been no evidence provided:

  • Myer Centre - Shoppng centre patrons are warned to watch their food and drinks at all times, it's not just enough to be sitting next to them. Also, keep an eye out for suspicious people, you might be attacked. Watch out for pickpockets.

I do not think it is fair for one persons bad luck to reflect upon the whole area, as it is very safe. Overall the city is very safe, if you use your common sense and take the usual precautions you will be fine. Even the areas listed under "stay safe" i believe are safe, and does not give a proper reflection of the city. I am sure that there are areas that could be unsafe in any city if you don't take general precautions, not just Brisbane. (DJ Feb 3, 2007)

You can find the anonymous vandal's bizarre anti-Myer Centre screeds on Wikipedia as well. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 10:36, 22 February 2007 (EST)

Tourist Website

edit

Suggest changing the main Brisbane link from ourbrisbane.com to visitbrisbane.com.au

The pages for cities like Melbourne all link to the offical tourism website. In Brisbane's case this is visitbrisbane.com.au not ourbrisbane.com which is more aimed at residents of Brisbane and its surrounds. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Ascough (talkcontribs)

Seems very reasonable to me, plunge right ahead. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) talk 20:03, 23 December 2009 (EST)
But preferably only once, at the top of the article. see Project:External links. --(WT-en) inas 20:25, 23 December 2009 (EST)

Stay safe

edit

The implication that suburban areas are less safe than the valley seems like a very odd comment to me. The strong police and security presence in the valley is there for a reason. If the assault rates were higher in the suburbs, I'm sure the police would be elsewhere. --(WT-en) inas 20:34, 26 January 2010 (EST)

I think what is currently implied by this section is that police presence in suburban pubs/bars is virtually non-existant. Therefore, any fights that do break out would likely result in a delayed response by police. Plus those sorts of place do tend to attract the "rowdy" local types, so fights definitely are more common. Yeah, the Valley is a lot more dangerous due to the large number of drunken people, and that's why there's a larger police presence. But in saying that, most of the people who go to the Valley really aren't out to pick a fight. I think suburban bars/pubs have a higher proportion of those likely to start fights. --(WT-en) Anewcleardawn 21:52, 8 September 2011 (EDT)

Then again, tourists aren't likely to be heading to Bracken Ridge for a drink, are they?

Moreton Island

edit

The current link for Moreton Island is to a holding page. Propose to change the link to [1]

2010 floods

edit

Maybe someone who is in the area might add some warnign box about the floods? Obviously, the waters are thankfully receding, but I'd imagine this would affect a range of amenities, and disrupt travel for some time?--(WT-en) Scharla 06:20, 21 January 2011 (EST)

I don't think a warning box is required. With the exception of the ferries, transport and travel is pretty much back to normal in Brisbane. There are no major road closures, and public transport is running intra and inter city, and no significant accommodation is closed. --(WT-en) inas 00:47, 22 January 2011 (EST)

Is it possible to use creative commons pictures from flickr etc to jazz it up? ie http://www.flickr.com/photos/stk20/5706651314/ for the transport section, http://www.flickr.com/photos/aramisfirefly/3606171644/ etc —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 109.193.198.96 (talkcontribs)

As long as the licence is compatible, you can download them, and reupload them onto wikivoyage shared. http://shared.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Main_Page. --(WT-en) Inas 05:24, 18 July 2012 (EDT)
