Home stay networks

The objective of Home stay network is not cheap travel, but meeting. There are already too many people who misuse these as cheap accomodation. If you want a cheap accomodation, go to a youth hostel. (WT-en) Yann 17:37, 23 Apr 2004 (EDT)

It might not be the objective, but it's one of the side effects. Just like people who take hitchhikers usually just want to meet people (so that's their objective). Oh, and hostels are too expensive for rock bottom ;) (WT-en) Guaka 11:36, 24 Apr 2004 (EDT)

I stayed in HI hostels for free, and this was all right. Otherwise, never seen a hostel cheaper than 5 euro, which is ways more than my daily budget when I'm travelling! :-) And yes, saving money is the big deal in free accomodation, meeting locals is great, but saving money is what brings most people to those networks -- in the first place. Isn't budget travelling riding on buses and sleeping in hostels? This article is supposed to be on travelling cheaper than that. (WT-en) Guaka 19:08, 14 Jun 2004 (EDT)

At this stage I'm tempted to treat it as both "normal" budget travelling, and super budget travelling, simply because there's not much information in it. Are we really going to have articles that define camping and sleeping rough? Can't these just be definded in the article? This may be a slippery slope to becoming a dictionary! (WT-en) Majnoona 09:54, 25 April 2006 (EDT)

But camping doesn't define "camping"; it's a disambiguator to articles about camping as a travel topic. If the link were direct to one of those articles, I wouldn't see a problem with it (like the links to the articles about hotels or hospitality exchange). On the other hand, I don't anticipate sleeping rough becoming a travel topic, though I suppose it could be. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 10:30, 25 April 2006 (EDT)

This article was, I think, intended by the 2004 creators to being a guide to travelling at the extreme end of budget. That's not really true anymore, should it have a less extreme title? (WT-en) Hypatia 08:02, 13 October 2007 (EDT)

Sleep Sheets?

I've just come back from backpacking around Europe for 7 months, staying in about 50 hostels... Almost ALL hostels specifically forbid the use of your own sleep sheets or sleeping bags because of the risk of bed bugs. I was never asked to pay for linen, as this article suggests.

Depends on where you are, In Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands it's pretty much standard practice to bring your own sheets or pay to rent when at HI-Hostels. Europe differs, but generally I'd say it's sound advice, though maybe the text can be adjusted to reflect regional differences. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) ^talk 13:23, 13 January 2010 (EST)
