Disambiguating Holland
editCopied from Project:Article naming conventions:
Currently the Holland page is a redirect to the Netherlands. However, there are numerous places in the world named "Holland", including Holland (Michigan), so we should have a disambiguation page. Adding Template:otheruses to the Netherlands article would link to "Netherlands (disambiguation)", which isn't right, so the other possibility is to change "Holland" from being a redirect into being a disambiguation page. That would seem to violate the "most famous" rule, so I'm stuck. I'd vote for a disambiguation page for "Holland", but what do other people think? -- (WT-en) Ryan (04 April)
- Forgot to sign my post yesterday, sorry. Anyhow, I'm thinking that Holland should be made into a redirection page since there really isn't any other way to create a disambiguation page for the less famous Hollands. Any objections? -- (WT-en) Ryan 10:18, 5 April 2006 (EDT)
- No, I think it's the right thing to do. It's weird when we have a name and the most famous place with that name doesn't have a guide with that name (there may be a few other examples), but I think it's best to do a disambiguation. --(WT-en) Evan 10:21, 5 April 2006 (EDT)
- You've done it now anyway, but was there anything stopping you having a link to a Holland (disambiguation) page from The Netherlands and using the words, but not the template to otheruses. There wouldn't be a problem with either being an orphan either. -- (WT-en) DanielC 14:43, 5 April 2006 (EDT)
- That could have been done, but it would have been an exception to the policy that "most famous" articles should use Template:otheruses. With Mediawiki 1.6 templates can accept default parameters, so we could have set the template up to display "For other places named Holland see Holland (disambiguation)", but it seemed (to me at least) like that would look a bit odd on an article titled "Netherlands". -- (WT-en) Ryan 14:53, 5 April 2006 (EDT)
- It would have been a bit weird, I was just pointing out there would have been a way around it. -- (WT-en) DanielC 15:37, 5 April 2006 (EDT)
- This is crazy. Holland should obviously redirect to the Netherlands, how could there be discussion about this? --(WT-en) globe-trotter 14:25, 22 July 2010 (EDT)
