Article Division and Downsize

As per (WT-en) Hypatia's observations of a year ago, it is - IMHO - time to start revising the main article, dividing and devolving the Melbourne article into its various relevant districts... For a big city, it is amazing that it has survived so long in this form (mind you, Chicago seems to exhibit the same phenomenon).... The See section of the main article, for example, has grown quite large and unwieldy - definitely time to identify the highlights of Melbourne's attractions, summarise them, and send the detail to the district pages. Being a native Sydneysider, I don't want to presume too much regarding the city's regions, so maybe several Melburnians can get the ball rolling? (WT-en) Paul James Cowie 03:10, 13 Nov 2005 (EST)

So, I just ignored my better judgement and - Sydney-Melbourne rivalry notwithstanding (!) - I've just included a proposed division of Melbourne into districts, as based on the official tourism web site's take on the matter..... Let's see if we can now start devolving some of the content from the main article out into the districts.... (WT-en) Paul James Cowie 04:05, 13 Nov 2005 (EST)
Nearly a year later... I've started to move some of the content out. Someone will need to keep an eye on things: it's really hard to persuade people to district-ize things!
Since I've just come back from there, I feel inspired to help with some district-izing. (WT-en) Slleong 09:44, 31 March 2007 (EDT)

External Wikis

Hi, I run the wiki Melpedia. Once the site is a bit more polished is their a possibility of adding to the main article? Perhaps under a learn more area? 203.217.28.179 00:06, 13 February 2008 (EST)

Wrong food showing

I'm not a wiki user. The picture of chinese new year food used on this page is salmon yu sheng, which is a dish developed and used in Singapore. It's not a dish that's common elsewhere for chinese new year (although this may change over time).

I am a Hong Kong Chinese that has family in Mainland China. This is not a common Chinese New Year salad. Chinese don't usually eat raw vegetables due to a variety of different superstitions and traditions. Raw fish is also not consumed, but is much more common in Japan and other parts of south east Asia.

In part, this can be tied to the belief that well cooked and presented food is more civilized & cultured. Much in the same way that chopsticks are preferred over knives and forks at the dinner table.

Not relevant

Hi. As a longtime Melbourne resident, I don't believe the below 'advertisement' is necessary or useful and have cut it. Also, Grey St is a well known street for prostitutes and I don't think it's in wikivoyage's best interests to direct people there. Thanks --(WT-en) MarinaK 17:16, 15 July 2008 (EDT)MarinaK.

The cheapest car rentals are from places like Rentabomb [1] but use may be restricted to the Melbourne metropolitan area. Rentacar in St Kilda, 11 Grey Street. St Kilda offers fantastically cheap rates in a family run environment. Rob the owner offers a great insight into Melbourne life and will happily offer great advice on where to go in the city, but ignore his unusual gambling strategies. Rob has a few cars scattered around his office sometimes with a brick on the back seat, but his rates reflect this. Far cheaper than rentabomb and he will also let you buy any of his cars for a decent price. But do think about petrol prices as many cars such as 4.0 litre ford falcon really do drink petrol, causing you to constantly watch the needle looking for the next petrol station.

Sleep listings in district articles

Hi. I moved the two sleep listings in the Melbourne overview article to the relevant district articles as the Melbourne article is more of a overview.--(WT-en) MarinaK 21:07, 15 July 2008 (EDT)MarinaK.

Indian food section

"The standard of Indian food is vastly inferior to Britain's numerous curry houses. The meat is often off cuts and served on the bone. You can also eat beef curry in many places. The curry houses are very dated and appear to be left behind in comparison with most trendy Melbourne eateries." was removed by me for the following reasons: Indian food in Melbourne should be compared to Indian food in India, not Britain. Meat is often 'off cuts and served on the bone' in India. This does not make it 'vastly inferior', but rather uses cuts of meat appropriate to the style of cooking. The decor is often not 'trendy', but I don't believe this is a useful generalisation for the traveller. Specific reviews can mention the decor, if the reviewer feels it important.

Perhaps a more qualified person could comment on the styles of Indian food available in Melbourne. I believe it is more North Indian/Punjabi, but comment from an Indian who has been to Melbourne would be beneficial. 202.131.123.66 15:20, 9 August 2008 (EDT)Rohan (Melbournian in India)

Useable

Ok I am looking through all these districts-and with the exception of 3-4 of 'em, they're all useable, but yet, you guys are keepin' it as a outline status. This is not good. No it ain't no guide or anything, and some of them barely have useable status and some you may want to add information but still. It is filled pretty ok, and there are some good listings, just, most of them are a far way from guide. Thanks.Keepsmiling, (WT-en) Edmontonenthusiast 19:14, 3 November 2008 (EST).

Nightlife / Drink

I have to say, after checking this article for a couple of times, it gets me upset every time. Especially the Nightlife section is useless. What's the point of writing in that there are hidden bars everywhere when you dont put up a bar to start off from or even better a couple of 'em. except for that it's really not that hard in melbourne, try a city like berlin that's way harder and there's still describtions of bars and clubs in there.

seriously people, put a little bit of effort into this one.

cheers --114.78.166.146 22:17, 30 June 2010 (EDT)
