What is the correct spelling? Tombouctou / Timbuctu / Timbuktu ...? --(WT-en) Nzpcmad 16:36, 7 Jul 2004 (EDT)

I've always seen Timbuktu in the US, while working for the UN, and in travel publications. But it sounds like a job for a google search... I found 278,000 for Timbuktu and 31,000 for Tombouctou-- almost all French. I suggest Timbuktu as the article name with redirects from the other two and the intro sentence "Timbuktu, also spelled TOMBOUCTOU" which sounds like the way to go here.. I'd agree with that but Wikipedia uses 'Tombouctou' with redirects from the other ones. --(WT-en) Nzpcmad 21:00, 7 Jul 2004 (EDT)
That doesn't really factor, though. --(WT-en) Evan 21:25, 7 Jul 2004 (EDT)

Name change

I moved this page to Timbuktu, since that seems to be the most common English name for this city. --(WT-en) Evan 00:02, 9 Jul 2004 (EDT)

Tour guide lk

edit

Hi, I don't know Wikivoyage's policy advertising lks, but I've had to remove a very useful-looking one from Wikipedia, so I've plonked it here under "Do". Do with as you will. Cheers, JackyR

Thanks (uh, I think...) You can check out our external links policy for future reference. In general, we have nothing against linking out to commercial stuff (ie hotels, restaurants) we just want primary sources. So a hotel's website is OK but a booking engine with a page on the hotel is not... (WT-en) Majnoona 12:08, 26 April 2006 (EDT)

Here's the link: *Timbuktu Tourism - Local Guide Services I have to say that tour guides are kinda a fuzzy spot. I'll let someone else make the call. (WT-en) Majnoona 12:10, 26 April 2006 (EDT)

Return to "Timbuktu" page.
