Tamsweg is the end point and important 1 station of the Murtalbahn, a narrow-gauge railway line connecting Unzmark in Styria and the international railway services with Tamsweg in the Lungau region of Salzburg. Trains run weekdays every two hours. In summer also historic steam trains operate on weekends with historic carriages. A part of the railway line further continues via Mariapfarr till Mauterndorf named "Taurachbahn", but this line is only used for historic train service and has no regular train service.

By car

edit

Tamsweg and the whole Lungau region is best accessible by car. Main route is the A10 Tauernautobahn passing the Lungau region from north to south. Parallel also the B99 road crosses the Lungau region but hereby runs via the mountain passes of Obertauern and Katschberg. In winter both passes may require chains after snowfall or even might be closed due to avalanche danger. From St.Michael follow the B96 till Tamsweg. The B96 Murtalstraße and the B97 Murauer Straße meet at Tamsweg and form a connection between the S36 Murtal Schnellstraße and the A10 Tauernautobahn.

In winter, snow and ice on the roadways are very common and winter tires are mandatory (during these conditions). Traveling on the valley road is usually unproblematic, as the road is well maintained and service also during snowfall.

By bike

edit

The cycle path is asphalted and suited or beginners as well as advanced cyclists. There are also good cycle paths in the surroundings and multiple mountain bike trails around.
