Tatar (татарча or татар теле) is the language of the Tatars. It is an official language of the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia. It refers to the Volga-Kipchak Kipchak subgroup of the Turkic group of languages. Tatar is spoken in Central Asia, USA, Germany, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, China, Russia, Finland, Turkey, Australia and other countries.

Tatar is also native for some thousands of Maris. Mordva's Qaratay group also speak a variant of Kazan Tatar.

The official Tatar script is the Cyrillic alphabet in Russia and Kazakhstan, and the Arabic script in China.
