Understand
editTehri district was changed drastically in the early 2000s by the construction of Tehri Dam, one of the largest dams in the world. Multiple settlements including the old town of Tehri were submerged, leading to the creation of New Tehri. Several high-profile activists, local community organisations, and environmental groups opposed the construction of Tehri Dam, which was a major political issue around the time of the dam's construction.
