The municipality is located close to the Russian border. The Värtsilä municipality was consolidated with Tohmajärvi in 2005.

Tohmajärvi is located along the Blue Highway (from Mo i Rana via Umeå, Vaasa, Kuopio and Joensuu), the last stretch along national road 9. From Petrozavodsk (Petroskoi) the route goes along the Blue Highway via the 1 Niirala border crossing point in Tohmajärvi.
