Packing List edit

For more information, see this article: Packing list

For my South American trip, I plan on taking the following.

Essential edit

Luggage edit

  • Backpack, to hold everything - not too new looking
  • Luggage locks (for checked luggage)
  • Pocket wallet - to use for quick access to cash, but easily disposable if pickpocketed (i.e. a decoy)
  • Plastic bags for protecting backpack contents
  • Bankcard for ATMs
  • Well-hidden credit card for emergencies
  • Torch (keychain sized)
  • Padlocks of various sizes

Lost card? First, cancel with commonwealth bank, who'll send it to Australian address.

Clothing edit

  • Travel pants (many pockets and ability to convert to shorts)
  • Money belt(s)
  • Warm clothes - thermals (especially for bus travel)
  • Beanie
  • Sunglasses with good UV protection
  • Swimwear
  • Sturdy, comfortable shoes
  • Broad brimmed hat

Toiletries edit

  • Towel
  • Toilet paper
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste (travel size)
  • Antiperspirant
  • Shaver(s) and shaving cream
  • Thongs - for showers
  • Universal sink plug

Medical edit

  • Lip balm
  • Bandages and anti-bacterial cream
  • Suncream with zinc oxide and titanium oxide as ingredients
  • Insect repellent with DEET (max 30%)
  • Ear plugs
  • Eye cover

Consumables edit

  • Plastic water bottle (buy more along the way)

Stationary and Documents edit

  • Pencil, pencil sharpener and paper
  • Passport and photocopies (including of visas)
  • Travel insurance policy details
  • Emergency phone number list - embassy, bank, police
  • Itinerary
  • Plastic sleeves
  • Use google documents to store other information
  • USB drive

Other edit

  • Alarm clock (watch)

Maybe edit

  • Something for hanging clothes in bathrooms ("Flexoline")
  • Soap (can also use soap as shampoo) - remember, most hotels will have soap / shampoo
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Batteries
  • Mobile - check if Virgin (Optus) has international roaming
  • Camera + charger + Australian-European power adapter (I can always rely on my travel companions' cameras!)
  • Pack Safe - lockable wire mesh that surrounds the backpack
  • Multivitamins
  • Water filter or water-disinfecting agents
  • Oral rehydration salts (e.g. Gastrolyte)
  • Big map of South America
  • Duct tape
  • Digital Themometer

Vaccinations edit

Visit "travel doctor" at least 2 months before departure.

Probably a good idea to get vaccinations for:

  • Typhod
  • Diphtheria
  • Hepatitis A
  • Yellow Fever (refresh needed?)
  • Meningococcal
  • Tetanus booster
