Understand
editChadstone was opened in 1960, and was the first self-contained shopping centre in Melbourne, as an open-air mall, which was shortly after roofed due to Melbourne's often rainy weather. Since then, it has grown significantly, absorbing nearby land to build large, modern extentions and multi-storey car parks. In 2009, it became the largest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere. Now, the shopping centre contains 211,929m² of floor space, comprising 550 shops spread over four levels, served by over 10,000 car park spaces. The centre is still expanding, with extensions currently under construction.
