User:SelfieCity/Jazz banners

Jazz edit

This was a harder one, and I only have two images. There are probably many other probabilities, but I think these two do a pretty good job, so I haven't done any more yet. On the first of the banners, there was a slight copyright/copyleft issue which I mentioned at Commons' help desk (it's public domain). I took Commons' Gottlieb license and copied the content to the description page of the file here, so that should be good enough:

This is a difficult one. Different kinds of jazz musicians will probably identify more with one or the other. #1 has, arguably, more famous jazz musicians: in the front are Charlie Parker and Miles Davis (the latter was probably the most famous jazz musician, and the first is highly regarded in jazz circles). It pictures the bebop setting, which is not so well-known with the general public but to modern jazz musicians is the most accurate picture of jazz musicians who are coming together for a jam session or recording. A big advantage for #1 is that the text at the top-right fits in well with the picture. #2 pictures Duke Ellington's Band (as the original file states in its title), which was also very famous. However, Duke Ellington's Big Band probably does not represent jazz in general as well as the first picture does — it represents a particular kind of jazz, which is popular with a particular kind of people. Also, the text and the picture combined in #2 cause some musicians to be covered, left or right (although perhaps a more horizontal version of the text box — like the one used for Khasab — could fix this problem). Overall, #1 is my first choice, and then #2 second. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 23:33, 24 February 2019 (UTC)

I'm a fan of Duke Ellington's band, but #1 is a better quality image. Let's hope the copyright issue is sorted!--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 00:13, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
It's not an issue with the image, if that's your concern, and when I come to think of it, it's not really an issue. It's just that the template for the copyright notice, {{PD-Gottlieb}} is not available on WV, so I had to copy the text in that template from to here. It's not the best solution perhaps, but it should be fine. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 00:36, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
  • I think it's premature to be talking about banners for this article at this point. There's a long list of work that needs to be done on the article itself (dotm#Jazz and Talk:Jazz each contain an exhaustive list of omissions) and not a lot of interest shown in addressing its deficiencies, and ten months after its nomination it still only has one full-fledged support vote. So let's direct our energy that way rather than worrying about banners for an article that, quite frankly, at this point has a significant chance of landing on the slush pile. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 02:44, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
Sure. I did these banners because I saw that was next on the list of dotms to be done. That made it sound pretty certain. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 03:25, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
