Toys and games have existed since antiquity, even though they've not always been the childhood amusements the english language ascribes to the word 'toy'.

  • National Transport & Toy Museum, beside Wanaka Airport, Wanaka, New Zealand. Daily (except 25 Dec) 8.30am-5pm with extended hours in summer. Has aircraft, cars, trucks, motorcycles, fire appliances, military vehicles and tractors, clockwork and battery powered toys.

    Also has porcelain dolls, teddy bears, pedal cars and money boxes.

  • 1 Museum of Childhood, 42 High Street, Edinburgh, Scotland, +44 131 529-4142. M-Sa 10AM-5PM; Su noon-5PM. See if you can find your old toys in the collection, or maybe the ones that your grandparents had. Free.    
  • 2 Hamilton Toy Museum, Callander, Scotland. Easter - October: M-Sa 10:30-16:30, Su 12:00-16:30. 5-room museum of traditional children's toys (cars, model soldiers, dolls, etc.) and shop. £3.
  • 3 Hornby Visitor Centre, Westwood Industrial Estate, CT9 4JX (near Margate). Exhibition of Hornby model railways, Airfix models and Corgi car models. See traditional British children's toys.
