User talk:(WT-en) Moon ra/Gudija Latvija 2006
Options for this article
editThis article seems to be progressing rapidly, but there have been several concerns raised about it:
- It is not in English. This is an English language travel site, so non-English articles really aren't appropriate.
- It appears to be about a specific sporting event. Normally that kind of information would be included in the country (Latvia), region (what region of Latvia does this event take place in?) or city (is the event specific to a city in Latvia?) article that is most specific to the event and NOT in its own article. See Project:What is an article? for guidance.
We generally like to move content to appropriate locations rather than delete, so there are a few options:
- Translate the travel-specific sections of this article into English and move the content to an appropropriate city or region article within Latvia.
- The author could create a user account and then move this content as-is to a page such as Moon ra/Gudija Latvija 2006. User pages are not deleted unless the user asks for them to be deleted, or if they obtain offensive content.
- Discuss the possibility of starting a Latvian Wikivoyage - see Project:How to start a new language version.
As it exists now this article will be deleted according to the Project:Deletion policy after fourteen days have passed, but we would rather not lose content that someone has obviously worked hard on. The author of this article should please feel free to comment below - we'd like to hear more from you about your goals with this article and how you think we should handle it. -- (WT-en) Ryan 10:32, 21 June 2006 (EDT)
Authors, please comment!
editJust to reiterate, this page WILL BE DELETED! To the people who have been working on it: please comment below about what you are trying to accomplish, and whether this content can be translated into English and used in appropriate places elsewhere on the site! We don't want to simply get rid of your hard work, but an article in Latvian is not appropriate for an English-language travel site! -- (WT-en) Ryan 04:08, 24 June 2006 (EDT)
Deletion
editThis article will be deleted in seven days. Please translate this article to English and we'll help place the information where it belongs. We'd rather keep the information, but as the information is in Lithuanian and this is an English language website we will be forced to delete the content, unless someone is willing to help us translate this to English. Thank you. - (WT-en) Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 05:32, 27 June 2006 (EDT)
Response
editHello folks. I appreciate your concerns and suggestions (even rather nasty speed-deletion option:). Meanwhile I repeat my explanation, which i've already wrote to sapphire (where is a whole text?). This article is not about simple cycling sport event. This is cultural travel. Call it expedition if you wish, but there is no fun. The reasons why article not in english is that at the present it serves mainly as coordination platform and information repository site about possible route, sightseeing opptions, etc., and obviously to translate multiple users information, which has tendency to change rapidly would be more than difficult. Since it's intented to be a trip to rather remote and closed country (Belarus) the information should be important for other people as well, if they ever consider visit these places, cause there is simply no such kind of information available elsewhere. Thus I insist not to delete article but allow us to keep on preparing information. I will personaly translate it after the end of our trip (after June 9th) and that will be shorter version than is now (more addapted to public use). I would suggest to make deletion deadline till 16th June. Regards, User:(WT-en) Moon ra, 27 June 2006
- I think you might be under the mistaken impression that Wikivoyage is a general-purpose wiki hosting service, or scratchpad for travel planning. It is not; we have specific goals to create a world-wide travel guide. If you are looking for a collaboration wiki for planning a trip, there are several Wiki farms that can help you organize your trip, including the ones listed on Dmoz as well as JotSpot, PB wiki, and Wetpaint.
- Since you've already started this page, maybe we could move it to your "user pages" space, and you can finish organizing your trip. --(WT-en) Evan 08:19, 27 June 2006 (EDT)
- Thank you for reminding Wikivoyage goals and other wiki links. Probably you're right - Wikivoyage is not intented to serve as organizing place. Meanwhile, I think that approach, when there is a short innitial collaboration period (eg, in orriginal language, deadline period etc) could help to write the good final wikivoyage-goals orriented article. That could be like betta testing.
- Anyway, you could move content to "user page", if you think it's appropriate - with temporal reffering link from original article. Alternatively you could let it for a sugested deadline period (or shorter). -- moon ra 27, June 2006
- It's done! Looking forward to more contributions in/about/for/from Latvia. B-) --(WT-en) Evan 20:48, 27 June 2006 (EDT)
